T.I. Rules As 'King' Of Album Chart

Comments

With the best sales week of the year, T.I. clocks in at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with "King." The Grand Hustle/Atlantic set sold 522,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, easily outdistancing new titles from Tim McGraw, Ghostface Killah, Rob Zombie and Atreyu.

"King" is the Atlanta native's best charting release thanks to a career-best sales week. In 2004, his "Urban Legend" bowed at No. 7 with 193,000, while 2003's "Trap Muzik" had a No. 4 entry with 109,000. "King" also crowns the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, replacing Prince's "3121" (NPG Music/Universal), which drops to No. 3 after one week at No. 1.

"King" is the best-selling album since the 2005 Christmas season, when Mary J. Blige's "The Breakthrough" debuted with sales of 727,000 and Jamie Foxx's "Unpredictable" bowed with 598,000.

Tim McGraw's "Greatest Hits Vol. 2 -- Reflected" enters The Billboard 200 at No. 2 with sales of 242,000 copies. The country superstar's Curb set also bows at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart as Alan Jackson's ACR/Arista Nashville set "Precious Memories" falls to No. 2; the latter slips 9-10 on The Billboard 200 on sales of 58,000 copies (+2%). McGraw's first hits set bowed further down The Billboard 200 at No. 7 in 2000, but moved more in its first week, racking up sales of 306,000.

Despite a 9% sales increase to 165,000 copies, the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical" falls 2-3 on the new Billboard 200.

Wu-Tang's Clan Ghostface Killah's fifth solo release, "Fishscale," bows at No. 4 with sales of 110,000 and at No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The Def Jam release gives the rapper his second-best career sales week behind the opening frame of 1996's "Ironman" (156,000).

Zombie matches his highest Billboard 200 position as the Geffen album "Educated Horses" debuts at No. 5 with 107,000. Zombie's triple platinum solo debut, "Hellbilly Deluxe," also opened at the same post in September 1998, moving 120,000 units. "Educated Horses" debuts at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums chart, where James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" (Custard/Atlantic) falls to No. 2; on the Billboard 200, Blunt's disc dips 3-7 on sales of 80,000 (-28%).

Shakira rockets up The Billboard 200 as "Oral Fixation, Vol. 2" (Epic) rebounds 98-6 on sales of 81,000 copies -- a 643% surge. Having already been on the chart for 18 weeks, the set was re-issued March 28 with two additional tracks: "La Tortura" and "Hips Don't Lie." The latter features Wyclef Jean and has so far reached No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After debuting at No. 1 last week, Prince's "3121" slides to No. 8 on The Billboard 200 thanks to a 59% drop to 76,000 copies. Atreyu's "A Death-Grip on Yesterday" (Victory) enters at No. 9 with 69,000 copies, the band's best position and sales week yet. Its last set, 2004's "The Curse," started with 34,000 at No. 32.

Just missing the top 10, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Show Your Bones" bows at No. 11 with 56,000 copies. The Dress Up/Interscope release far surpasses the first week of the group's last album, "Fever To Tell," which moved 15,000 in its opening frame back in April 2003 and ultimately posted its best week (21,000) in March 2004 after radio took to the single "Maps." "Fever" has sold 532,770 copies to date.

At 10.8 million units, overall CD sales were up 1% from the previous week and up 4% compared to the same week a year ago. Sales for 2006 are down 3% compared to 2005 at 140.4 million units.
