Gnarls Barkley Makes U.K. Chart History

Comments

As anticipated, R&B/hip-hop duo Gnarls Barkley made history by achieving the U.K.'s first-ever No. 1 single to top the chart solely on download sales. "Crazy" (Warner Bros.) debuted at the top yesterday (April 2), following the change in eligibility under which the Official U.K. Charts Company now incorporates download sales in the tally one week before a physical equivalent is available.

The collaboration between former Goodie Mob principal Cee-Lo and artist/producer Danger Mouse has been available as a download since March 13.

Elsewhere, there was another album chart triumph for English rock act Embrace, which scored its second consecutive British No. 1 album with "This New Day" (Independiente). The new album contains last week's No. 2 single, "Nature's Law."

This week's singles survey also revealed new top 10 hits for Morrissey, whose "You Have Killed Me" (Attack/Sanctuary) arrived at No. 3, and the Streets, in at No. 8 with "When You Wasn't Famous" (679 Recordings). Morrissey's album "Ringleader of the Tormentors" is out today, and the Streets' "The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living" is due April 10 in U.K. stores.

Depeche Mode's "Suffer Well" (Mute) debuted at No. 12, as the group plays the second of two Wembley Arena shows tonight. Michael Jackson's latest Dual Disc reissue, "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Epic), came in at No. 17, followed by Mary J. Blige and U2's new version of "One" (Geffen) at No. 19.

Embrace's No. 1 debut came ahead of former Virgin labelmates Massive Attack, whose "Collected" compilation opened at No. 2. Last week's bestseller, the self-titled Syco Music set by Journey South, fell to No. 3, and last week's runner-up, Andy Abraham's "The Impossible Dream" (Sony BMG), dropped to No. 4.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Show Your Bones" (Fiction/Polydor) started at No. 7 and English rockers the Kooks enjoyed a 33-9 revival for "Inside In/Inside Out" (Virgin), after its latest single, "Naive," climbed 28-6 as physical sales were added to downloads for the first time.

Placebo's "Meds" (Virgin) withstood all competition to secure a second week at No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums chart, but there was a new No. 1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, where Ne-Yo's R&B ballad "So Sick" (Def Jam/Universal), rocketed 24-1 on the pan-European chart.
