Film legend Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band will open the fifth annual Rochester International Jazz festival in Rochester, N.Y., this summer. The June 9 concert at Eastman Theatre will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund. Tickets go on sale Friday (March 10) via Ticketmaster and the Rochester Jazz Web site.
Allen, who plays clarinet, and his band have performed for nearly 25 years, including a long-running Monday residency at New York's Cafe Carlyle.
The Rochester International Jazz festival, which runs June 9-17, will announce a full schedule and artist roster on April 6.
Singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae's self-titled debut will be released June 6 in North America via Capitol. As previously reported, the set debuted last weekend at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart. The single "Put Your Records On" peaked at No. 2 on the U.K. singles chart.
Capitol this week released the three-song digital EP "Like a Star," featuring the title cut, "Enchantment" and "Choux Pastry Heart." The artist will introduce herself to U.S. audiences with shows in New York (March 13), Los Angeles (March 15) and Austin, Texas (March 16, as part of South by Southwest).
San Francisco quintet Film School's tour van and music equipment was stolen this morning (March 8) in Philadelphia. According to a band spokesperson, the perpetrator(s) broke into the Ford Econoline van, sawed through the steering wheel Club and drove through the security gates of a Comfort Inn parking lot at approxiamately 8 a.m. Four amps, three guitars, over a dozen pedals, a drum kit and a number of other items were taken.
"This isn't the story of a band being silly and randomly leaving their van on the street," reads a statement from Film School. "This is a band that took precautions and still got screwed."
The band has canceled tonight's show at the Black Cat in Washington D.C. and a gig tomorrow in Providence, R.I. Film School hopes to borrow and rent equipment for remaining tour dates at Wellesley, Mass., New York, Memphis andthe South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.
Police are still investigating the crime with help of an eyewitness account. Updates will be posted on the bands' MySpace site.
Macy Gray, Mick Fleetwood, the Dave Mason Band, the Syn, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and California Transit Authority have signed on for a tribute to veteran songwriter Ray Kennedy, to be held March 14 at the Avalon in Los Angeles. The event will be filmed for a Kennedy-centered TV pilot, "In One Room With Ray Kennedy."
Also on the bill is celebrity band 16:9, featuring James Denton of "Desperate Housewives," Hugh Laurie of "House," Bob Guiney of "The Bachelor" and Greg Grunberg of "Alias." Proceeds will benefit the Guitar Center Music Foundation, which works to bolster music education in schools.
