Kaiser Chiefs Storm BRIT Awards

Comments

Kaiser Chiefs took home three trophies to dominate the BRIT Awards 2006, held tonight (Feb. 15) at London's Earls Court. The alternative rock outfit took home British live act, British group and British rock act. The Chiefs converted three out of five nominations and kicked off the night's gala with a performance of the hit single "I Predict a Riot" (B Unique/Polydor).

James Blunt, Green Day and Coldplay were all multiple winners. Singer/songwriter Blunt took honors for pop act and British male solo artist, while Green Day won the international group award as well as the international album for "American Idiot" (Reprise). Coldplay won British album for "X&Y" (Parlophone/EMI Music) as well as the single award for "Speed of Sound."

Arctic Monkeys won their sole nomination in the British breakthrough act category, which was decided by listeners of BBC Radio 1, the country's leading top 40 national station.

Prince (with former bandmembers Sheila E and Wendy & Lisa), Gorillaz, Coldplay, Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson and Jack Johnson were among the performers.

As previously reported, Paul Weller was recognized with the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award. Weller also performed a set of solo tracks and Jam favorites.

Perennial winner Robbie Williams failed to extend to his leading run of 15 BRIT Awards. He was beaten out in the British male solo artist category -- his only nomination this year -- by Blunt.

Coverage from the ceremony, which is sponsored by Mastercard, will be broadcast tomorrow on British national TV network ITV1.
