'Walk The Line' Earns Five Oscar Nominations

Comments

Although the shadow of "Brokeback Mountain" looms large, the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" pulled in five Academy Award nominations this morning (Jan. 31). Among the spoils were best actor and actress mentions for Joaquin Phoenix (Cash) and Reese Witherspoon (June Carter Cash), respectively. The film is also nominated for best costume design, film editing and sound mixing.

"Brokeback Mountain" earned a leading eight nominations, including best picture and best score for composer Gustavo Santaolalla. With fellow first-time nominees Alberto Iglesias ("The Constant Gardner") and Dario Marianelli ("Pride & Prejudice"), he'll face stiff competition from double nominee John Williams. The veteran's work on "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Munich" brings his career total to 45 nominations, which have yielded five Oscars.

Dolly Parton pulled in her second best original song Oscar nomination for her "Transamerica" song "Travelin' Thru." She was previously nominated for her theme to the 1980 film "Nine to Five," in which she also co-starred.

Also vying for this year's award are the "Crash" song "In the Deep," performed by Kathleen "Bird" York on the soundtrack and co-written with Michael Becker, and Djay's "Hustle & Flow" cut "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," which was written by Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard.

The 78th annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live March 5 from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on ABC. Comedian Jon Stewart will host. The full list of nominations can be found at Oscar.com.
