New York rockers the Strokes earned their first No. 1 U.K. album yesterday (Jan. 9) with their third Rough Trade set, "First Impressions of Earth." The group reached No. 2 with their two previous studio sets: 2001's "Is This It?" and 2003's "Room on Fire."
James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" (Atlantic), the U.K.'s best-selling album of 2005, held at No. 2, while Kaiser Chiefs' "Employment" (B Unique/Polydor) jumped 7-3 in its 44th week on the chart. In its 40th week, KT Tunstall's "Eye to the Telescope" (Relentless/Virgin) improved 17-6.
On the singles chart, Shayne Ward's "That's My Goal" (Syco Music/Sony BMG) began a third week at No. 1 and remained ahead of Nizlopi's "JCB Song" (FDM), a chart-topper before Christmas in its third week at No. 2.
Madonna's "Hung Up" (Warner Bros.) stayed at No. 3 while Irish vocalist Brian Kennedy climbed 11-4 with "George Best -- A Tribute" (Curb). The track is Kennedy's version of "You Raise Me Up," the song he recorded before Westlife took it to the top of the U.K. chart late last year. Kennedy sang the song at the Dec. 3 funeral of Best, one of the most popular soccer players of all time.
"You Raise Me Up" reached No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for Josh Groban in March 2004 and No. 73 on the Hot 100 the following month. It was also a Hot Christian Adult Contemporary No. 1 for Selah in June of that year. Kennedy previously recorded for RCA and also worked in Van Morrison's band for a number of years; his previous biggest British single was "Life, Love and Happiness," a No. 27 hit in 1996.
At No. 10, Birmingham rock act Editors enjoyed their first hit single with a reissue of the track "Munich" (Kitchenware). One of the bands most widely tipped for 2006 success in the U.K. media, Editors also enjoyed a 39-18 climb for their album "The Back Room."
Robbie Williams' "Intensive Care" (Chrysalis) is at No. 1 on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums survey for a sixth aggregate week, while Madonna's "Hung Up" is in its eighth week at the helm of the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles roundup.
