Supergrass Plugging In For 2006 Tour

Comments

U.K. rock quartet Supergrass will return to North America for a 15-date tour that begins Feb. 6 in Toronto. The trek will be in support of the group's latest Capitol album, "Road to Rouen," which debuted in August at No. 9 on the U.K. album chart.

Supergrass played largely acoustic shows in New York and Los Angeles in September, but the 2006 dates are expected to return to a more electric format.

"I'll pick up an acoustic for 'Low C' and then I'll go electric for 'Caught by the Fuzz,'" frontman Gaz Coombes tells Billboard.com. "It's a nice way to have it, because we have some real dynamic possibilities for our sets. You can go from 'Tales of Endurance' to 'Richard III' and then back to 'Sad Girl,' as long as it's not too confusing."

The group admits it would love to spend more time touring in North America, but Coombes concedes, "It's also about money and popularity. If we were massive, we could do these big tours. But we're not there. We have to really work at the ground level. Even after 10 years, we have to really work it here to make ourselves heard. We can do a few weeks at a time, but anything more is just not possible. It's lucky the fan base is so strong, so it makes it worthwhile coming anyway. It's always really exciting."

Supergrass is finishing up its latest round of European shows and will play tomorrow (Nov. 17) in Clermont, France. Also on tap is a Dec. 18 support slot for the Foo Fighters at London's Earls Court.
