Anvil Brings Metal Mayhem To Cannes Film Festival

by Scott Roxborough, The Hollywood Reporter  |   May 17, 2009 12:41 EDT
Anvil, the Hanson Brothers of Canadian heavy metal, are bringing a little headbanging mayhem to Cannes.

Lead guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner are in town to support Sacha Gervasi's award-winning documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," which traces the band's 30-year struggle to rock on despite the odds.

The doc has become a sleeper hit in the U.S. and U.K, grossing more than $500,000 so far, and has given Anvil another shot at the musical career they always dreamed of.

"The last year has been an exciting journey -- we've toured the world with the film, and Cannes is like the cherry on top," said Kudlow, whose gabby yet goofy nature bellies the image of the satanic hard rocker.

Reiner, more reserved and skeptical, said being in Cannes was "nice" but added that "it seems there's a lot of people here looking for money."

Still the scraggly haired picture of adolescent rebellion despite being in their fifties, Kudlow and Reiner were set to rock the Croisette on Sunday with a private gig at Morrison's Pub.

Was it worth it waiting 30 years for their big break?

"I don't regret anything; the way things happened, it makes a much better story," Kudlow said. "If we broke big in 1982, the whole thing probably would have burned out in two years and that would have been it. So I don't regret a thing. How could I? I'm in Cannes!"
