Anthony Hamilton
Anthony Hamilton made fans wait three years for his latest album, 2008's "The Point of it All." But he promises that won't be the case for his next effort.
"I may put out another one before the end of this year, or the top of (2010)," the North Carolina-born R&B singer tells Billboard.com. "I've got at least 10, 12 songs, but I'm gonna do maybe 12 more and go from there."
And Hamilton says he's gearing up for a bit of musical change on his fifth studio set.
"It's gonna be a blues, country, soul, rock kind of album on the next one," he explains. "I want to do something different. I may do some orchestrated stuff. I'm not afraid of it. I have a fan base that loves me enough to trust that I'm giving them. That's a great place to be."
Hamilton says he's already worked on new material with "The Point of it All" cohorts such as Mark Batson ("Love Me When I'm Wrong"), Kelvin Wooten ("Who Left the Gate Open?") and Salaam Remi ("The World"). He adds that "I'm definitely going to have some collaborations" on the album, perhaps with blues-rocker Jonny Lang and country singer Josh Turner, whose 2007 song "Everything is Fine" featured Hamilton. His wish list also includes B.B. King.
Hamilton -- whose musical resume also includes guest appearances with Angie Stone, Twista, The Game, Young Jeezy and a Grammy Award-winning spot with Al Green -- has recorded a few new features that will be coming out soon. He worked with Nappy Roots on a track for its next album, as well as with Georgia rapper Fonzworth Bentley. And Hamilton has laid down a vocal for Dr. Dre's upcoming "Detox" that he's "just waiting to see if it's gonna stay or not. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one."
But, Hamilton says, he has no insight about when that decision will be made or when we'll actually hear "The Detox."
"Dre's just very, very, very good at getting what he wants. He's pretty talented," Hamilton notes. "When he's producing something he'll try different ingredients, and he'll make what he feels is the best for the project. He just looks at the overall body of work, not just songs or individual collaborations, which I think is smart."
Hamilton is currently touring in support of "The Point of it All," which debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and plans to release a third single to follow the title track and "Cool."
