Billboard has chosen a dozen of the best trios to make their mark on the music world over the past five decades, and judging by the diversity of these groups, it's pretty amazing to hear what three people can do all by themselves.

There's the flawless harmonies and disco grooves of the brotherly Bee Gees, the iconic rock'n'rap of Run-D.M.C., the hard rock attack of Cream, Rush, ZZ Top and Nirvana, the hitmaking R&B of the Supremes, Destiny's Child and TLC, and the otherworldly sounds of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, who tore up the rulebook for what could be done with guitar, bass and drums. With little precedent, these trios maximized their assets to produce a wealth of everlasting music.
