Ever since releasing their smash album "Wide Open Spaces" via Monument in 1998, country superstars the Dixie Chicks have never left the Grammy spotlight. Having already scored seven awards for their songwriting and performance prowess, Martie Seidel, Emily Erwin and Natalie Maines are hoping to "make nice" at the ceremony with their seventh studio album, "Taking the Long Way" (Open Wide/Columbia).
The crew has come a long way since forming in the early '90s, including the departure of two founding members and the addition of Maines. To date, "Wide Open Spaces" has moved 8.6 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Subsequent releases "Fly" and "Home" have been fueled by singles like "Goodbye Earl," "Long Time Gone," "Travelin' Soldier" and the hit cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide."
In 2003, the Chicks made both friends and enemies over Maines' negative comments about President Bush and U.S. military action in Iraq. Parts of "Taking the Long Way," most notably the defiant "Not Ready To Make Nice," are in response to the chain of events that followed the very public scuffle.
