By utilizing the same chirpy sounds that dominate Vampire Weekend's debut and merging them with the disco beats of the Rapture, Foals' rookie outing could have been an album searching for an identity. Instead, by tossing some horns and a variety of dark basslines into the mix, the U.K. quintet creates intense, unique songs that are more than a sum of their influences. While opener "The French Open" takes a while to gain steam, the next song, "Cassius," with its ever-present trilling guitar lead and yelped vocals of singer Yannis Philippankis, is exemplary. And when those elements coalesce, as they do regularly throughout "Antidotes," Foals are as electric and fascinating as anything to come out of the United Kingdom in some time.—Robert Thompson
