The cinematic-sampling funky breaks act Wide Receiver was founded by Steve Blood and Ian Gotts. The London-based duo began recording material and in 1996 sent a demo to Mark Jones, the head of premiere big beat label Wall of Sound (Propellerheads, Les Rythmes Digitales, Wiseguys). Wide Receiver contributed a track to the Wall of Sound compilation Dig the Nu Breed and followed with the Get Completely Cained EP on their own Woof! label in mid-1997. Even at that early date, Blood and Gotts earned a reputation for their sampling prowess, often from hard-as-nails British mod films like The Italian Job and Get Carter (both featuring Michael Caine). The pair remixed a variety of acts, including 18 Wheeler, Arkarna, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Cardigans, among others. The single "Breakbeat Sushi" became a club hit after being compiled on Lacerba's Big Beat Elite, Vol. 2 in early 1998, and Wide Receiver released their album debut And Finally... in 2000. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
