Not to be confused with the gospel artist of the same name nor the talented jazz drummer, this Walter Johnson was a superb but unfortunately dismally under-recorded soul singer who wrote much of his own material. Sometimes compared to Otis Redding in terms of musical quality and obviously not fortune, fame, nor exposure, Johnson's most famous record was a single on the Wand label matching the procrastinating "Not Now But Later" with the miserable "Love Keeps Me Crying." The proprietors of Wand may not have had magic powers, yet Johnson's performances easily live up to the high standards set by the label, which between 1959 and 1976 released nearly 300 singles. While somewhat beefed up due to a resurgence of interest in so-called Northern soul, documentation and information concerning Wand productions tend to be slim. Johnson's recordings date from around 1966 but are usually identified by soul cultists as "...the record after the Ivories in the catalog." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
