Writing a "bio" of the Sound Cage is a daunting task, not least of all because it's uncertain whether "the Sound Cage" as such existed. What is for certain is that in 1987, a record called The Sound Cage was issued that included the participation of about half a dozen musicians, probably from San Francisco (where the LP was apparently recorded). The album was produced by "Reyvision," which perhaps may have been the name of a collective-type organization of the artists involved. At any rate, it's a very interesting avant-garde recording that could well be the work of two different ensembles. Side one, titled "The Other Acts," has somber works of various unusual instruments treated with electronics and tape manipulations. Interesting, but the real standout is side two (titled "Pianos and Thinking"), with watery, reverberant piano improvisations in the vein of (and as good as) similar work by Brian Eno and Harold Budd. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
