The Mentals first came together in 1998 when the combination of singer/guitarist Steve Tobin, bassist Scott Laws, and drummer Breeze Rendon came together due to their common musical interests. They especially loved the thick grunge rock sound that Steve Albini often produced and that Nirvana used to make so well, but the band was stopped in their tracks when Tobin was in a serious car accident that almost ended his life. He was in a coma for months, but finally came out of it and endured enough physical therapy to get his music career back in 2000. He was more inspired than ever, and worked on Oh Well (their debut) throughout the year until its release. He finally was able to play gigs in 2001, and the band hit the road to celebrate their first live shows in three years. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
