A Detroit-area band who bridge the gap between the city's history as the home of upbeat soul and current identity as a center for down-and-dirty garage rock, the Elevations are an eight-piece R&B revue who blend old-school sounds with the sass and enthusiasm of rock. Founded by guitarist and sax player Ben Mancell, the Elevations were formed in 2002 with the express intent of adding a more soulful and danceable flavor to the Detroit rock scene. Mancell soon joined forces with a small army of fellow musicians -- Eric Stollsteimer on guitar and vibraphone, Jim Auge on bass, Joel Devonshire on drums, Jerry Berlongieri on keyboards, Gabe Heiss on sax, Jason Ledbetter on trumpet, and Sean Ike and Erika Herron trading off on lead vocals. The group's tight arrangements and dancefloor-filling sound quickly won them gigs at Detroit's better rock venues, and in 2004 the group released a self-titled eight-song CD. Ironically, as the group's popularity began to swell locally, Mancell left the group to move to New York to pursue his education, though the other Elevations continued on with his blessings. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
