Biography

The Beyond were a Derby, England quartet who specialized in highly technical heavy metal bordering on thrash. John Whitby (vocals), Andy Gatford (guitar), Jim Kersey (bass), and Neil Cooper (drums) came together in 1988 and spent years honing their complex sound through extensive touring on the British club circuit. Eventually, they signed with EMI subsidiary Harvest for the release of 1992's Crawl, but unfortunately, the album went largely unnoticed. The band switched to Music for Nations for their second effort, Chasm, in 1993, but persistent consumer indifference ultimately led them to rename themselves Gorilla and attempt a fresh start. Two years and two poorly received EPs later, they finally gave up for good. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
