The forward-thinking electronic outfit Sunkings has moved from recording intelligent techno for GPR to psychedelic trance for Blue Room Released, a leap made by few in either scenes. The group began in 1990, as the trio of Jay Paine, Paul Davies and Michael Bluemink. After the release of several singles on a self-financed label gained the attention of 808 State, Sunkings recorded the Return of the Killer Rays EP for 808's own Creed Records. Hugh Ashton replaced Bluemink around that time, just before the trio signed to GPR, home to recordings by Luke Slater and the Black Dog. Sunkings released their debut LP Hall of Heads in 1994 and earned plaudits from Brian Eno and John Peel. After GPR went under, the group switched to Blue Room Released, an increasingly respected label on the new psychedelic trance scene. Their second album Soul Sleeping became the first American release on Blue Room America. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
