Named after a kind of houndshark found in the waters surrounding the British Isles to the Iberian Peninsula, Starry Smooth Hound was the alter ego of British singer/songwriter Vinny Miller. As Starry Smooth Hound, Miller released songs on a few 4AD and 4AD-related samplers, including Anakin, Dust Distorts, and Kiddy's Got Four Fingers, which were all released in 1998. Starry Smooth Hound also included Laika's Guy Fixsen as a collaborator; Miller would send tapes of his songs to Fixsen, who would then add experimental and electronic elements. Miller abandoned the Starry Smooth Hound name after these recordings were released, and resurfaced in 2003 with the Breaking Out of Your Arms single and his long-awaited debut album, On the Block, a year later. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
