New Orleans garage band Souls of the Slain formed in 1966, comprised of guitarists Cornell LeBlanc and Jerry Heinberg, bassist Jim Hutchison, and drummer Billy Thomason. The group cut its teeth at the Crescent City club the Beaconette, opening for national acts like the Blues Magoos before signing to the tiny Rickshaw label to issue its lone single, "I Can't Go On," essentially a rewrite of Love's "Signed D.C." -- in fact, a straight cover of Love's seminal "7 and 7 Is" made up the flip side. When Heinberg exited Souls of the Slain in 1968, he was replaced by future Radiator Camile Baudoin. A series of additional lineup changes followed, and at various times the roster included guitarists Richard Rhodes and Emile Guest. Souls of the Slain dissolved in 1969. Both sides of their rare, highly collectable single later resurfaced on the compilation Sixties Archive Vol. 3: Louisiana Punk. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
