Tampa garage band the Soul Trippers originally formed in 1964. Singer John DeLise, guitarists Buddy Richardson and Ronnie Vaskovsky, bassist Ronnie Elliot, and drummer Spencer Hinkle previously operated under the name the Outsiders, recording a 1966 rendition of the Eddie Cochran classic "Summertime Blues" that was a big enough regional hit to land the group a contract with Laurie Records subsidiary Providence, who persuaded them to change their name to the Soul Trippers to avoid conflict with the myriad other Outsiders lineups across the globe. Their blues-punk cover of James Moore's "I'm a King Bee" followed on Providence in July of 1966. According to the Fuzz, Acid & Flowers website, the record sold 20,000 copies before the discovery that the Soul Trippers were in fact five white guys prompted many radio station managers to pull it from their play lists. This bizarre case of reverse racism hastened the band's demise, with Richardson and Elliot reuniting in Noah's Ark while DeLise later resurfaced in the Rovin' Flames. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
