Although they were lumped in with the glam metal movement of the '80s during their brief recording career, New York City's Smashed Gladys was more a kin to such streetwise metallic punks as Guns N' Roses, Hanoi Rocks, and the Ramones. Consisting of members Sally Cato (vocals), Bart Lewis (guitar), Roger Lane (guitar), J.D. Malo (bass), and Matt Steluto (drums), Smashed Gladys first came together in the mid-'80s, gigging regularly at such local venues as Danceteria, the Cat Club, and L'Amour, before issuing a self-titled debut album on their own (which featured a spirited version of the T. Rex nugget "Metal Guru"). The band then signed with Elektra Records, and despite their brand of street metal breaking into the mainstream (via Guns N' Roses, Skid Row, etc.), the quintet only stuck together for a single critically favored album, 1988's Social Intercourse, before splitting up. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
