Formed in 1984 between high school friends Mike Coleman and Chris Gissendanner, the Singing Spoons originally began as a noise project that consisted of kitchen utensils and a telephone being used as "instruments." Resulting in a number of experimental home recorded tapes that eventually progressed more and more towards rock, the Tallahassee duo released a number of demos between 1984 through 1989. By 1987, the Singing Spoons started taking themselves more seriously with John Barlow (guitar) and John Hintz (bass) completing the lineup as Mike Coleman took up the drums while vocalist Chris Gissendanner moved onto guitar. Josh Clemons eventually filled in for Barlow's departure before their debut album Resin Cabin was self-released in 1989. Following their 1991 Buzz EP, the Singing Spoons called it quits the following year with Coleman and Gissendanner forming Ultraboy. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide
