The Detroit-based contemporary gospel group Salt of the Earth features a whopping nine singers, and although they're nominally led by Gloster Williams, any member is -- by design -- perfectly capable of performing as a featured soloist. The harmonious coexistence of all that talent is an important part of what makes the group inspiring, not to mention musically potent. Salt of the Earth debuted for the Southern label Malaco in 1990 with He Will Deliver, and recorded urban-flavored gospel fairly steadily throughout the decade. A pair of albums for Intersound, Order My Steps and I Will, appeared in 1995 and 1996, respectively. The group scored its biggest success yet with 1998's Happy Hour, which featured the hip-hop-flavored gospel radio hit "I Feel a Praise Comin' On." ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
