The musical partnership of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Julie Matthews and vocalist and guitarist Pat Shaw represented the temporary meeting of two still-thriving careers. Their duo album Lies and Alibis was nominated for a British Country Music award in 1995, while their collaboration with Kathleen and Rosalie Deighton, Kate Rusby, and Kathryn Roberts yielded a memorable album, Intuition. A native of Yorkshire, England, Shaw began performing in folk clubs in her late-teens. Influenced by country music and bluegrass, she formed her own roots-oriented band in early 1995. A member of the Albion Band from 1990 until 1997, Matthews has proven to be equally proficient on piano, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, and keyboards. Her songs have been covered by Fairport Convention and Mary Black, whose rendition of her "Thorn Upon the Rose" was a Top Ten hit in Ireland and Japan. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
