Paranda is the name of both a backing band and a genre of music -- specifically, a hybrid of West African percussion and guitar (often reminiscent of artists like Ali Farka Toure) and native Caribbean sounds. Paranda is the music of the Garifuna people, who descended from a mix of African and Arawak Indian stock and were deported from the island of St. Vincent to Central America by the British. Most Garifuna live in Honduras and Belize, but the latter country is far and away the center for traditional paranda music. It is also home to singer/guitarist Paul Nabor, one of the foremost practitioners of the style, and the leader of Paranda the band. Born in approximately 1927 and based in the village of Punta Gorda, Nabor began touring internationally with Paranda during the late '90s, hoping to spread the sound of a rapidly disappearing style of music. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
