Biography

Following four studio albums and a pair of hit singles (including the Top Ten "Get Off") with the dance-pop act Foxy, singer Ish Ledesma put together the group Oxo. Backed by guitarist Orlando, bass player Frank Garcia, and drummer Freddy Alwag, they signed to Geffen and released their self-titled debut in 1983. They scored a hit with the catchy, albeit vacuous, "Whirly Girl" that spring, spending nearly four months on the charts. It would prove to be the group's lone hit and, although Oxo would soon become cut-out bin fodder, "Whirly Girl" would endure, making its way onto numerous new wave compilations. Ledesma, a one-time member of the TK Records (home of KC & the Sunshine Band) house band, continued to perform and produce dance records. ~ Tom Demalon, All Music Guide
