Generating a kind of pumped-up garage soul rock sound led by dual lead vocalists Jaime Kozyra and Leah Fishman, New York-based quintet the Nouvellas came into being in 2007 after the demise of a similar soul group, the Dansettes. Five of the Dansettes' seven members (Kozyra, Fishman, brothers Andrew Pierce on drums and Dennis Pierce on guitar, along with bassist Justin Angelo Morey of the Black Hollies) opted for a more stripped-down and direct soul sound and formed the new group, playing their first gig as the Nouvellas in September of 2007, as well as contributing their services as the backup band for soul singers Archie Bell, Roscoe Robinson, Young Jessie, Sharon Jones, and others. Signing with the Ernest Jenning Record Co., the Nouvellas released a debut single, "Satisfied" b/w "Right Kind of Woman" in 2008, followed one year later by a full-length album. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
