The Procussions

Biography

A founding member of indie hip-hop troupe the Procussions, Mr. J. Medeiros, aka Jason Medeiros, is a progressive-minded MC whose passionate rhymes have subtle hints of spirituality. Before forming the Procussions in 1997, he had been a rhyme-battling MC, a graffiti artist, a DJ, and a voracious beat-maker since high school. He initially put his productions aside because he favored Procussions member Stro the 89th Key's beats over his own. In 2002, the trio decided to leave their hometown of Colorado Springs, CO, a barren city as far as hip-hop goes, for Los Angeles to get their foot into the record industry door, releasing their first album, As Iron Sharpens Iron, on Basementalism the following year. Between that album and the tons of live shows that they did around the country, Medeiros and co. graduated up to the independent Rawkus Records for their sophomore effort, 5 Sparrows for 2 Cents, in 2006. The Rawkus affiliation alone garnered the Procussions lots of media exposure, inspiring Medeiros to release his solo album, Of Gods and Girls (2007), which he had been working on since 2004. Medeiros enjoyed his own recognition when the self-produced song and video for "Constance," a narrative about human trafficking and sexual exploitation in the Philippines, spread widely throughout the Internet and was featured on a CBS Evening News special on online pornography in 2007. ~ Cyril Cordor, All Music Guide
