An experimental unit from Michigan, Monera formed in early 1997 as the free-form studio experimentation, expression and musings of a gang of four -- Brian Hauch, James Rodriguez, Ted Klug, and John Bush, later joined by Rebecca van der Leest and Phil Rodriguez. Using keyboards, computer-MIDI hookups, found sounds, and guitar effects, the quartet explored the music of sound and archived hours of recordings. Later in the year, James and Phil Rodriguez formed Elsie + Jack Recordings (named after their grandparents); the label's first release was the compilation Elsie and Jack and Chair, which found Monera alongside such paragons of the avant-experimental community as Rapoon, Crawl Unit, and Mitsuru Tabata (of Zeni Geva), as well as fellow Michigan compatriots Flutter and Füxa. The group continued recording, and readied a 3" fully laser-etched CD-R, Free Oxygen Kills Monera. They also provided a remix for Aube's Elsie + Jack release Pages from the Book, and appeared on a number of other compilations. The group is also working on a full-length entitled Monera as a Group Are Distinguished from All Other Organisms Largely by Negative Features. ~ AMG, All Music Guide
