Having experienced the rock and roll lifestyle on the East Coast with his former band The Skels for several years, three albums and many Replacement comparisons, singer/ guitarist Mike "Sporty" Murphy left the band and settled away in Long Island, NY. Always having admired the like of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave, Sport wrote and recorded a whole bunch of songs for himself and the people closest to him with his limited debut "Willoughby." An album that's not entirely folky, but has more of a thicker sound with added drums, bass, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and toy instruments. With his song structures that are often compared to former Kill Rock Star artists Elliot Smith and Mary Lou Lord, label founder Slim Moon found a love for Willoughby and re-released it on his label in 1999. Magic Beans followed a year later. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide
