Originally named Car, the band that would eventually be called Lincolnville formed in Portland, ME. Made up of singer/guitarist/engineer Colin Decker, bassist/singer Alec Thibodeau, and drummer Ryan Dolan, they released their first album, Lincolnville, in 1996. Recorded at home and released independently, this debut record caught some significant regional attention and the band began opening some high-profile local shows. After Thibodeau was replaced by Neil Collins on bass, they adopted the album title as their new name and Lincolnville went on to record the seven-song Black Box. 1998's Black Box found the band borrowing some recording equipment and recording primarily in their rehearsal space, with Decker handling the engineering chores. The record garnered heavy college radio play and favorable reviews for its unique blend of melodicism, Americana, and ethereal guitars and vocals. After a U.S. tour, Lincolnville began work on a follow-up to Black Box, which was never completed. They played their last show on June 30, 2000, citing geographical constraints as the main reason for their breakup. Decker had been living in Boston for some time and the progress of the band began to suffer as a result of the lengthy commute to Portland. He went on to play guitar with the Sheila Divine. ~ Scott Janovitz, All Music Guide
