San Francisco's indie pop meets hip-hop trio Lil Pocket Knife consists of rapper Lil Pocket Knife (aka Kristy Geschwandtner), keytarist George Patterson (formerly of Portland, Oregon's Knodel), and drummer No Skills (aka Lynae Burns). Before the group formed officially, Burns and Patterson had been playing together, with Burns on keytar and Patterson on drums, but Patterson proved to be the better keytarist and the pair switched instruments. Burns met Geschwandtner in 2001, when they both moved into the same warehouse. Geschwandtner was a longtime hip-hop fan, and had been working on her own raps and break-dancing moves that reflected her reality as a young white woman originally from New Jersey. When Patterson joined Burns in San Francisco, they began working on new wave-inspired music for Geschwandtner to rap over, and with Lil Pocket Knife, the band was born. Though they didn't record much in their early days, the trio soon became known as one of the city's best party bands; they also played the San Francisco Ladyfest in 2002, cementing their reputation as a can't-miss live act. Lil Pocket Knife spent the following year recording their Pants Control EP, which they sold at their shows until it was given a wider release by Narnack in spring 2004. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
