Renowned for their garage cult classic "I'm Not There," the Sunnyvale, California-based Lil' Boys Blue were led by singer/guitarist Larry Diehl, who formed his first band, the Tri-Tones, in 1961. The following year he formed the Conquests with guitarist David Westberry, and in the wake of the British Invasion, the group rechristened itself the Lil' Boys Blue, adding bassist Alan Ramsey, keyboardist Ed Willis, and drummer Rick Puncoshire. A major Bay Area favorite, they briefly flirted with Epic Records before decamping to San Francisco's Golden State Studios to record their lone single "Take Me Away"/"I'm Not There," self-released on their Batwing label in 1966. Though a local hit, the record never earned national release, and it is the pounding B-side that is now renowned by garage fanatics thanks to its inclusion on the third volume of the influential Back From the Grave series. Another studio session yielded the songs "Just for Laughs" and "Reason Why," neither of which was issued commercially. After adopting the name Hilton Trolley and a psychedelic sound to match, the group dissolved in 1967. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
