Clever folk-pop confection Kitty (Snyder) began her music career with Loveapple, a band that was formed by classmates at Fredonia State University in Fredonia, NY. Her warm vocal style was a highlight of Loveapple and got Kitty some attention, including being asked to audition for 10,000 Maniacs when Natalie Merchant left the band (Kitty decided not to go to the audition because of schedule conflicts and travel issues). In 1997, she convinced the band to relocate to Athens, GA, but by that time they were having significant creative differences, with Kitty wanting to explore more of a folk style and Loveapple leaning more towards fleshed-out indie-rock. In 1998, Kitty began playing solo shows and self-produced a cassette collection of her songs; an acoustic set that she played with Cracker brought her to the attention of David Lowery, who signed her to Pitch-a-Tent Records and released her first solo album, Celebrate, in 1999. ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide
