The eldest son of James Hewitt, John composed primarily for the vocal medium. Accompanying his father on trips to southern cities, John acquired a taste for teaching, composing, writing and reporting as he traveled. The majority of his "resident" periods were spent in Baltimore. Many of his songs for which he is remembered were sentimental. The most popular included "All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight," and "The Minstrel's Return'd from the War." He also composed an oratorio "Jeptha" in 1845. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
