The tenor saxophonist John Best seems to have appeared on only one record, but what a record it is. African Sanctus was the work of David Fanshawe, much better known as the musicologist behind a series of brilliant field recordings of ethnic music. For the early-'70s recording project involving Best and enough other studio players to stuff a Greyhound bus, Fanshawe stirred together African music, a Catholic mass, and avant-garde vocals, and according to the critics experienced the success of a chef who attempts to make beef stew out of abandoned tires. Judging from the career of this tenor saxophonist, who should not be confused with the highly successful jazz and studio trumpeter of the same name, this was not an album that caused any of the mostly unknown participants' phones to start ringing off the hook. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
