Biography

RSS
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Jim Allen specializes in an original and memorable musical blend of country, folk, and rock. A native of the Bronx, New York, Jim came up in the burgeoning New York City scene of the early-90' s (Richard Shindell, Jeff Buckley, etc.). His first solo album, 1996's 'Weeper's Stomp, ' was issued on the independent 1-800 Prime label, which proved to be a critical favorite with it's acoustic and blues leanings. His second release, 'Straight Time' (also on 1-800 Prime), was more up-tempo and even more impressive, as Allen incorporated elements of country and lounge into his sound, reminiscent at times to such big name artists as Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, and Leonard Cohen. 'Straight Time' also marked the first time that Allen was joined on record by a full band - his wife Barbara Allen on drums and harmony vocals, Mark Rubinstein on piano, and Steve Alcott on bass (plus other guests). The album received exceptional reviews, as notable singer/songwriter Eric Andersen raved, 'Jim is the best songwriter in New York.' Similar Artists- Eric Andersen, Paul SiebelRoots and Influences- Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
