James Yuill is an artist who combines acoustic traditional and modern digital sound-generated music to create new music that has also established a unique subgenre in alternative and indie pop -- namely, folktronica. Born James Yuilliburgen in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England, he was influenced by the progressive songwriting of Nick Drake, as well as forward-thinking rockers such as Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Justice, the Chemical Brothers, and Aphex Twin. Essentially a fusion musician, Yuill has created his style with a guitar, vocals, and a laptop, influenced by both British and French traditional musics and Italian disco-produced basslines, loops, or techno enhancement. Yuill was initially heard on a recording where he made a cameo appearance whistling with Mark Knopfler in 1983. He turned to playing in the streets of his home in London as well as clubs, incorporating daytime people's music with danceable late-night sounds. As a composer, he has written music for two short films and contributed to the soundtrack of the BBC/Channel 4 Off Limits program. He has issued two albums -- The Vanilla Disc on his own label in 2005 and Turning Down Water for Air in 2007 for The Happy Biscuit Club, reissued by the Moshi Moshi label in 2008. Yuill has garnered a huge amount of critical attention, including features in NME, Dazed & Confused, and Clash magazines, the latter of which featured him as Best Newcomer of 2008. Yuill is also a sought-after remixer, and has worked in this capacity with artists like Au Revoir Simone, Reverse Migration, Tilly and the Wall, David Holmes, and Rod Thomas. He has performed in the U.S.A. at the South by Southwest Music Conference, as well as Radio One Big Weekend, the Latitude Festival and Club NME in the U.K. The Nettwerk Music Group signed...
