Sparse and poorly recorded sessions are unfortunately the basis of Grey Ghost's (born Roosevelt Thomas Williams) fame. An exciting, if erratic, Texas barrelhouse pianist who was active since the '20s, Grey Ghost enjoyed a slight career boost in the '90s. Other than older fans who'd seen him playing around Austin and hardcore collectors, few people knew anything about the Ghost until the LP Grey Ghost surfaced on Catfish. A reissue of 1965 field recordings, its horrendous recording quality obscured the often captivating rhythms and his spirited vocals. But after its appearance, the Ghost was featured at several festivals, and was heard on a "Bluestage" show for National Public Radio in 1994. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
