Tenor saxophonist Gerry Gibson seems to have pledged allegiance to Buddy Guy during his career, starting out with a striking series of recordings blues guitarist Guy began making in the late '50s and early '60s. This brilliant combo sound -- heavy on electric guitar, buffeted by a small but zesty horn section -- turned into a constantly touring unit, eventually playing rock festivals in stadiums as well as dank blues clubs. Gibson was also part of the later collaboration between Guy and harmonica player and singer Junior Wells, a road show with many gigs on college campuses, sidemen's heads hung a bit low from reviews which consistently accused this band of presenting more jive than sincerity. Brother Jarrett Gibson also played tenor and alto sax, and the siblings commonly stood toe to toe in the horn sections of various Chicago blues bands. An early but classic sax performance takes place on a Junior Wells side entitled "Universal Rock," also featuring the sublime guitarist Earl Hooker. There is a Gibson on sax, but the blues forensic lab is still undecided over which brother it is. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
