Knoxville, TN punk-pop combo Flesh Vehicle traced its origins to the 1992 formation of the Used, a trash-punk quartet formed by singer/guitarist Tom Pappas, guitarist Brandon Fisher, bassist Chris Hargrove and drummer John Davis. After issuing a pair of self-released cassettes, Davis left the Used to form Superdrag, eventually recruiting both Pappas and Fisher to join the band as well; Superdrag quickly superceded the Used as the primary creative outlet for all concerned, and after a series of well-received indie releases recorded its major label debut Regretfully Yours in 1995, scoring an alternative radio hit with the single "Sucked Out." In the meantime Pappas also continued writing and recording his own material, and in early 1996 he, Davis and Superdrag drummer Don Coffey Jr. entered the studio as Flesh Vehicle, releasing a self-titled cassette later that year. In the wake of Superdrag's 1998 effort Head Trip in Every Key Pappas left the band to focus on Flesh Vehicle full-time, issuing Elastic Prose the following year. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
