Performing mostly covers of American and British pop hits, Ernesta Dunbar and her band, Afrotonic, have successfully fused jazz, soul, pop, funk, R&B and hip-hop into their unique dance music. Although they scored a North American hit with "Don't Follow Me" b/w "The Wind" in the late-1980s, Dunbar has aimed most of his subsequent attention towards audiences in Asia, especially Singapore. Accompanying her five octave on bass and drums, and joined by deejay Vincent Shih, percussionist Amir and saxophone player Jimmy, Dunbar has found a warm welcome in her adopted homeland. Together with Afrotonic, she appears every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at popular Taiwanese nightspot, Tu. A native of Philadelphia, Dunbar grew up in a musical family that includes Jamaican drummer/producer Sly Dunbar. She has sung with such Philly Soul artists as Teddy Pendergrass, Bunny Sigler, Grover Washington, Jr., Bobby Brown and Jaamaladeen Tacuma. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
