Head of the Department of Ethnomusicology at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, Israel, since 1994, Edwin Seroussi has studied Jewish music for nearly three decades. Seroussi has lectured on the Jewish music of the Ottomon Empire, the Moroccan Jews in Israel and the Sephardic Jews in Vienna, Austria, at Tel Aviv University and Levinsky Teachers College in Tel Aviv and served as deputy director of the Jewish Music Research at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He scored the music of three cassettes -- Judeo-Spanish Moroccan Songs for the Life Cycle and Hpsh'can Rabbah in Casale Monferrato, 1732 and The Music of the Mountain Jews (Eastern and Northern Caucasas) -- and one CD Ottomon Hebrew Sacred Songs. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1952, Seroussi moved to Israel at the age of 19. He holds a master's degree in musicology from Hebrew University and a Doctorate from the University of California in Los Angeles. Seroussi's book, Popular Music in Israel: The First Fifty Years was published by Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, in 1996. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
