The New York City collective Dujeous recall hip-hop's golden age, bring genres like rock, reggae, and jazz into the mix, and like the Roots, kick it with a live band in the studio and on the stage. Friends since elementary school, Dujeous officially formed in their freshman year of high school. After their 1995 single "New York Views" was given to their school buddies before graduation, the band gave the rest of world a chance to hear Dujeous by releasing their 1996 cassette Leading by Example. With word of mouth growing, the band took it to the next level and released its first 12", "Breathtaking," in 1999. The single sparked interest in the world of underground hip-hop and was supported by touring. Years of taking it to the stage kept Dujeous out of the studio until 2002 saw their second 12" "Spilt Milk" appear. A year later they were co-writing tracks for DJ Rob Swift's Under the Influence album and releasing their own mixtapes along with a compilation of old tracks, As Promised. They released their proper full-length debut, City Limits, in 2004. Work with Saigon, Keith Murray, and Juelz Santana's Purple City crew followed in 2005 along with an exclusive mixtape made for the online service AOL. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
