Funky reggae, hip hop with vocals, DJing, and Jamaican-style toasting are some terms that describe Dread Flimstone's music. Hailing from Venice Beach, CA, producer/musician Rex Morgan grew up in an ethnically diverse environment, wholeheartedly soaking in the influences of R&B, funk, and soul sounds. After flirting with a punk rock career, Morgan became a Rastafarian, growing dreadlocks and playing reggae. Some of his favorites are Sugar Minott and Barrington Levy. The Dread Flimstone moniker started out as a joke when Morgan was working on a music project. Teaming with vocalist Jah T and Papa Yaie, he formed Dread Flimstone and the Modern Tone Age Family. The band toured with Burning Spear, Yellowman, Ziggy Marley, Third World, and Big Audio Dynamite. After having a single named "From the Ghetto" on the 1992 compilation Acid Jazz Collection One, the band was signed to Scotti Bros. Records distributed by BMG. The From the Ghetto album was issued in spring 1992 and included such standouts as the title track, a cover of Billy Stewart's "Sitting in the Park," "Knowledge," and "Tribute." ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide
