Dr. Dave Burns is one of three musicians with this name, not including the doctorate, who are listed in the Tom Lord discography of recording jazz and blues musicians. It is the latter genre that has mostly absorbed this bassist over a career that has lasted more than three decades. His main association on disc has been with the band Big Al and the Heavyweights, based out of the port of Mobile, Alabama and exporting a blend of rhythm and blues and Cajun that has resulted in a large following. Burns grew up in the south of Georgia and began touring in the '70s, garnering extensive experience as a bassist. He has performed with Canned Heat and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and has also played country with artists such as Willie Nelson and Earl Thomas Conley. He should not be confused with the jazz trumpeter of the same name who's associated with bandleaders such as Dizzy Gillespie and James Moody, nor with the singer and trombonist based out of Washington, D.C.. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
