Singer and pianist Dominic Alldis was born with music coursing through his blood. Both parents were classical musicians. His father John Alldis is well-known as a choir director and orchestra conductor with many classical albums to his credit. Son Dominic is one of those few who have successfully managed to bridge the gap between the two genres, working successfully in both, although jazz and cabaret take up most of his time. Starting to work at his chosen profession in 1985, Alldis has played at major clubs throughout the United Kingdom over the years. He has worked opposite many major pianists and singers including Blossom Dearie, Dave Frishberg, and Bob Dorough. Among his major influences he numbers Mel Torme, Hoagy Carmichael, Bill Evans, and Erroll Garner. His second album Turn out the Stars was a tribute to Bill Evans. Not limiting himself to the usual menu of compositions, his albums reflect his interest in French cabaret material and Brazilian songs. He has also performed with numerous British jazz personalities including Don Weller, Clark Tracey, and the wonderful jazz singer Stacey Kent. As an adjunct to his pianism, Alldis has an attractive, relaxed singing style which works well with the material he chooses, such as an album devoted to the music of Noel Coward. Drawing on his training as a classical pianist and cellist, Alldis has written A Classical Approach to Jazz Piano, designed to educate classical pianists on the techniques and nuances of jazz. Alldis has been made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his contributions to the Academy. Alldis continues to be active as a performer and recording artist in both the U.K. and on the Continent. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide
