The son of a saxophone and clarinet player for the Bunny Berigan Band, Doc DeHaven (born Doster Robert DeHaven) has made his presence felt on the jazz scene of Wisconsin for half of a century. Together with his Chicago-style jazz band, he performed three nights a week at the Pirate Ship Bar in Madison, WI, from 1957-1970. Although he began playing piano in the fifth grade, DeHaven found his natural musical voice after switching to the trumpet in junior high school. Forming his first band while a student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1953, he continues to work with the group. His daughter, Kelly, sang with the band for several years. Tracks from DeHaven's five albums were compiled and released as The Best of Doc DeHaven in 1995. The former music director of a high school in Madison, DeHaven continues to teach privately. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
